Is the wedding photography industry dying?

Someone brought up this point in one of our post a few days ago and I wanted to offer my opinion to all of our photographic friends to read… :)

I feel that this industry has Sooo much room to grow, there are so many new and exciting things to keep us pro photographers thinking creatively I don’t see how we could EVER stop growing as an industry and individual artist! Photography is one of the few art forms that was created solely from technology, and as technology grow so does this great industry, no one can cap us but our selfs!

I remember the day I bought my first digital camera (Kodak 14N) just six years ago and how scared I was of the thought of something new, It seems silly to look back on it now that I have mastered the digital transition! Now comes mixing video with stills or what some of us have coined it as “fusion”, Once again I felt the butterflies in my stomach as I thought of the learning curve of teaching myself how to capture video! It’s been a solid three months now and I still need more practice, but I am getting stronger everyday at our video captures and our clients are really responding to the video sideshows that we are making for them. Every time I feel those butterflies, I go full steam ahead because I know the reward will be great!

I once heard someone say, “If you are not learning something new everyday, your competition is!” This quote summarizes exactly how I feel about the future of our industry! We have got to keep up with technology or we are going to be left in the dust! The strong will grow stronger and the others will put themselves out of business! Every 6 months DeEtte and I work hard to reinvent our selfs and do something new and showcase it at our local bridal show, first we started with Panoramic images and the brides LOVED them, then we came up with adding linen texture to the Kodak metallic paper, next came our 17×8 and 20×8 album, then destination bridal and engagement session, Then our “off the wall, on the wall” series, then 2.5 inch gallery wraps, then wedding day slide shows at the reception, then the photo booth, then the Sallee Trophy Bride contest, then video fusion and the next big thing we are doing at this July bridal show is really going to blow away the brides! If you know us at all, you know it will be something that has never been done before but will soon be the “Next BIG Thing!” Some of our local competition despises us for being innovators and pushing the envelope, but remember, we don’t strive to be better than any of our competitors, we strive to impress the brides and show them what professional photography is all about!

I feel this recessions going to do two things for this industry, weed out the lazy photographers that don’t want to put forth the effort to stay around, and that will make the good photographers shine even more! The “shoot and burn” photographers that do not charge enough for their services will soon realize that shooting a ton of weddings just to barely scrape by will not put food on the table for long and the passion will quickly subside, they will need to raise their prices and compete for business solely by their personalities and portfolio or find a new job to support their family! I don’t worry about these photographers because their is and will always be a place in our industry for them, everyone needs to learn from there own mistakes and grow from them, DeEtte and I did!

I don’t know about you but I want to stick around for a bit longer, I LOVE my job! Think positive and GREAT things will happen! Don’t let your self worry about what others are doing, focus that energy into doing what you need to do to stay in business and take care of your family, family is the only thing that matters in the end! :)

Focus on your imagery and the rest will follow…JB Sallee

April 1, 2010 - 12:51 pm Jonathan Ivy Foster - JB- Great post. You and DeEtte have been an inspiration to my wife and I as we have started our photography business in the heart of the recession. By "reinventing" ourselves and learning as much as we can, whenever we can, we continue to be more successful than we could ever imagine. This industry is nowhere near its end, rather I believe it is in its infancy and is going to explode with the invention of "fusion" photography. This just gives us another medium to express ourselves and another way we can give our clients beautiful memories. This is just the beginning and so far its been the ride of a lifetime. I really hope my wife and I can meet with you guys. We are thirsty for something new!

April 2, 2010 - 6:59 am Mattias - Incredibly inspiring as always!

April 2, 2010 - 8:15 am David Medina - To do all the things you mention is good. In fact, I do most of them. But you need more than sales gimmicks to stay in top of your game. You need solid photography that stay a step ahead of what Uncle Joe can do. I have been a photographer long enough to have seen several evolutionary transitions of the industry. And while there're have always been bottom feeders, none like today as anyone can get one of the excellent digital cameras, play some actions in PS and buy one good marketing program and "feel" they are pro photographer, yet not know anything about photography. The only good thing they brought to the industry is the realization that this is a business also. In a real way, they have help the industry and the real photogs. I am glad for the recession, as it will purify the industry by separating the wanna be and those who built their business in sales gimmicks from the real wedding photographer.

April 3, 2010 - 5:06 am Will Pateman Photography - A wonderful and timely article..The Brits get so much stick in the UK when we try to push the boundaries and create some wonderful works of ART. We need more people.. Americans, Canadians and Australians included to re-educate people about this industry and that quality isnt cheap.

April 5, 2010 - 2:16 pm Jen Steele Photography - Hi Thank you for the great post. You reminded me that we are all artists, each with a unique and creative way to see and capture the world around us. We can stay true to who we are and how we see things and stay focused and inspired with our work. Or we can run around with our heads cut off trying to please everyone and 'their' visions. It is our style, the quality of our work, our art and personalities that keep us employed. Why wouldn't we want to push a little harder, challenge ourselves a little more, try new things to keep our creative juice going, keeping ourselves and our clients EXCITED!

April 6, 2010 - 2:05 pm Misti - Thank you so much for your take on the "gloom and doom" articles popping up lately! Its some scary stuff to think about. Before I got into photography, I was a radio broadcaster and went through the same stuff (even before the recession came). With the advancement of technology, radio peeps were losing jobs left and right. I was fortunate enough to get out on my own accord, but the stress of "not knowing" what was going to happen was intolerable. As a fairly new kid on the block here in photo world, I was getting really nervous about the general attitude from others toward these articles. I really appreciate your point of view and optimism!!! Thanks again! - Misti

April 7, 2010 - 4:56 pm Marie Knabe - Wow! That was all great! Really. I love the part where you say the lazy ones will get weeded out! That is so true. I too sometimes get a little frustrated cause it's hard to keep up, but then when I think positive and just keep trying new things and my clients love them and grow with me, it is so worth it. Cuz I too love my job. Even if for some reason..I had to close my studio and start over...that is just what I would do..start over and come out stronger, cause this is part of me and who I am and what I will always be! Thanks so much for being so great, and one of my top faves! Hope you little girl is doing well too! Marie

April 25, 2010 - 12:40 pm Las Vegas Wedding Photographer - JB, Love your work and I'm glad your not giving up. Keep up the great work and thanks for your encouragement!

May 4, 2010 - 7:39 pm jcogliandro - hey just read this and appreciate your positive attitude and totally agree. I love that you all push the envelope and work hard... makes me work harder. as to those in your market who despise you.... well screw em.

June 29, 2010 - 6:02 pm Johnny Tran - I totally agree with everything you said! Especially about the lazy photogs and the shoot and burners. They will learn and learn the hard way. They will fade away and the truly passionate photographers will still be around, establishing ourselves even more. I love my job too and I ain't going nowhere!

June 6, 2010 - 8:48 am DSLR Video : Thoughts from the Edge of Nowhere! - [...] you would use one of the digital video cameras. How difficult can that be? Not very until I read a post on Sallee Photography’s blog. In it, there is a great quote: If you aren’t learning something new every day, you [...]

Pro Photographers Family shoot week June 22-28

Our Family…

Family is one of the most important things in life, many of us pro photographers got into this industry to photograph other peoples families and major event because it makes us feel warm inside to hand over a piece of art that families can enjoy forever, but we get so caught up in the day to day jobs of owning a photography business that we neglect our own families and never get a professional portrait made for our selfs.

We are putting a stop to this!  Any pro photographer that needs a family portrait made can come in June 22-28 and we will personally photograph your family and also give you a nice discount so you can get a big wall portrait or wall grouping made!  We will also be donating 5% of proceeds to the Ronald McDonald house and photograph many of their families as well.

If you are interested, please leave a comment and we will contact you with more info!
